Pueblo began as a fort way back when and since then has become the 9th largest city in Colorado and one of the largest steel producing cities in the country. “Steel City” was proclaimed “American’s Home of Heroes” by U.S. Congress for its four medal of honor recipients that called Pueblo home, more than any other city in the country.
Today, Pueblo is most well known for its historic Arkansas Riverwalk, 32 acres of navigable walking paths and waterways where you can have a private boat tour, rent paddle boards and pedal boats or enjoy dinner on a gondola. Lined with shops and restaurants, you can also take your dining on land and enjoy the city’s fine faire that, more often than not, will include Pueblo chiles.
Explore the many pueblo chile farms in the area and even pick some chiles to take home. The people of Pueblo are so proud of these locally grown hot peppers that every September you can find live entertainment, street vendors and lots and lots of chiles at the three day long Chile & Frijoles Festival. Another annual event in Pueblo is the Colorado State Fair that began 150 years ago and brings in over 400,000 attendees each year.
When you’re not attending the much anticipated festivals, you’ll enjoy the charm of Union Avenue’s shops, restaurants and farmers market. The Union Avenue Historic District is part of Pueblo’s Creative Corridor, an area of the city where you’ll find galleries, cafes, sculptures, live music and museums, including Buell Children’s Museum, ranked the 2nd best children’s art museum in the country. And when you’re done delving into your creative side, another art form awaits; the great outdoors of the Southwest, including the Rocky Mountains.
There’s Lake Pueblo State Park, where you can water ski, river tube, sail and swim. Or explore the one million acre forest of San Isabel National Park filled with waterfalls, wildlife, and 19 fourteeners (mountain peaks with an elevation of at least 14,000 ft.), including the highest point in the state of Colorado. Whether summer or winter there’s plenty to do, like hitting the slopes at Breckenridge, Monarch and Echo Mountain ski resorts.
With a cost of living 10% below the national average, Pueblo is one of the most affordable places to live in America. It’s a place that offers you the opportunity to own your practice and impact countless patients’ lives. A rewarding career, lifestyle, endless chiles and gorgeous Rocky Mountain sunsets. What else do you need, really?
