There is a valley in New York State, where the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers merge; this is, Binghamton, NY. The birthplace of IBM, and home of the spiedie (more on that later), the Greater Binghamton area is surrounded by the beauty that New York State is known for.

Binghamton is part of the Greater Binghamton area, encompassing Broome and Tioga counties. And it’s home to Binghamton University, recognized for its value by both Forbes and Money Magazine, and celebrated year after year as one of the top 40 public universities by U.S. World & News Report. The University and its students keep the area vibrant and youthful.

Speaking of youth, there’s a plethora of activities for the whole family. Take in the animals at Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, established in 1875, making it one of the oldest zoos in the country. Binghamton’s Children’s Museum, The Discovery Center, offers an opportunity for kids of all ages to enjoy hands-on exhibits, including a Story Garden, an A-10 Jet and the Open Wide Dental Exhibit (you liked that one, didn’t you?)

Enjoy some of the most beautiful falls and character museums in downtown Binghamton.

During the cold months, the winter wonderland will have you cozying up inside or hitting the slopes, such as Greek Peak Mountain Resort. Located only 40 minutes north, you’ll have 55 ski trails to choose from, not to mention an indoor water park to boot. Binghamton, situated near the Pennsylvania border, means that the beautiful Poconos Mountains are another great getaway option.

As it warms up, locals hit the parks. The Broome County Park System offers, “three beaches, picnic areas and picnic shelters, play structures, a family campground, boating, miles of trails for walking, biking or cross-country skiing, and much more.” Otsiningo Park is one of those parks, one that many flock to for the walking trails, sports fields, and a summer concert series. The park is most famous for and the Annual Spiedie Fest, one of the top three hot air balloon rallies in the U.S. and an event celebrating the local delicacy, spiedies.

Rounding out the culture are a symphony orchestra and world-class opera, which speak to the art lover, while the professional hockey and baseball teams will satisfy those sports fans.

With a low cost of living and a low average commute time of 19.8 minutes, a life in Binghamton means that you can participate in all of these activities. And you’ll still have enough time to get to know the friendly down-to-earth people that call this great metropolitan area home.
