Meet the leaders of Affordable Care, one of the nation’s oldest and most established dental support organizations. This team is dedicated to advancing Affordable Care’s success in providing valuable business support services to affiliated Affordable Dentures & Implants practices, and to ensuring the success of our talented team members, from dentists to lab technicians to corporate and practice staff.
President, Chief Executive Officer and Director
Doug Brown has 20 years of experience leading large dental support organizations. He joined Affordable Care, LLC, in March 2011. An industry pioneer in his own right, Mr. Brown 15 years ago brought together a group of industry CEOs, which led to the formation of the Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO), an association made up of top executives from the 35 largest DSOs. Mr. Brown is the immediate past president and the current chair of the Government Affairs Committee for ADSO. He previously worked for Arthur Young & Company, several multiunit retail and service organizations, and a management consulting firm that he cofounded. Mr. Brown holds B.S. and M.B.A degrees from Duke University and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He is married with one son.
Chief Operating Officer
Gene Kirtser joined Affordable Care Inc. in July 2017 as President and Chief Operating Officer. He spent the previous 10 years as the President and CEO of ROi, a leading health care supply chain company. Gene has over 25 years of diverse business experience in the health care industry, having served on both the supplier and provider sides of the industry. Prior to his tenure at ROi, Gene worked at Baxter/Allegiance/Cardinal, ChoicePoint Health Systems, Maxxim Medical and SRI Surgical. He earned a bachelor of science degree in finance from Miami University.
Charles Zasso, DDS, FAGD, MBA
Chief Clinical Officer
Charles Zasso, DDS, FAGD, MBA serves as Affordable Care’s Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) and has over 20 years of clinical and administrative experience in the Dental Support Organization (DSO) space. Dr. Zasso leads clinical support and development for more than 300 dentists in the Affordable Dentures & Implants affiliated network of over 235 practice locations. Charlie graduated from Northwestern University Dental School with honors and received his General Practice Residency training at the VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, Florida. He received his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2001 and a Master’s in Business Administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in 2009 with a Dean’s commendation for outstanding academic achievement. Charlie is a founding Board member of the DOHI (Dentists for Oral Health Innovation), a national group with over 8000 members representing the interests of group practice dentists nationally. Dr. Zasso is married with three children.
Karol H. Twilla
Vice President of Practice Operations
Karol Twilla joined Affordable Care in 1995 as the director of patient services. She was Affordable Care’s first operations consultant, then advanced to senior operations consultant and director of operations before assuming her current responsibilities. Ms. Twilla brings to Affordable Care the experience she built with South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control. Ms. Twilla holds a Master of Health Administration from University of South Carolina and a bachelor’s degree from University of Northern Iowa. She has three children.
S. Paul Steelman, Jr.
CPA, Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Director
S. Paul Steelman joined Affordable Care in 1995. His experience includes three years with Price Waterhouse and three years with DIMON Incorporated (aka., Alliance One International), a publicly traded company based in North Carolina, as financial reporting manager. Mr. Steelman is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in business administration–finance. He is married with two children.
Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer
A veteran of retail-oriented healthcare, Adam Siegal joined Affordable Care in 2009 as vice president of marketing and business development. He now heads up all marketing, advertising, strategy, public relations, media, sales development, and patient services functions. Mr. Siegal previously held the top marketing spot at Pearle Vision Eyewear. He also spent 10 years at the Pepsi-Cola Company, where he held roles in marketing, new product strategy, inside-sales leadership, and general management. Mr. Siegal earned his Bachelor of Arts in economics from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in management in marketing and finance from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. He is married with three children.
Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Matt Wells joined Affordable Care in 2013 as vice president of information technology, and currently oversees the company’s IT and procurement functions. He is a senior IT leader with more than 20 years of successful experience leading change to improve IT services and business process across several industries. Mr. Wells previously worked for Dex Media, where he held many IT leadership roles and most recently worked as vice president of enterprise applications. He received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Wake Forest University and his master’s degree in technology management from the University of Maryland–University College. He is married with two children.
Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel
David Slezak joined Affordable Care in 2012 as vice president–chief legal officer and corporate secretary. He has more than a dozen years of experience leading the legal function of large dental support organizations, and is heavily involved in the DSO industry’s government affairs efforts. Mr. Slezak previously was senior vice president–general counsel for a financial institution, where he also served as a voting member on its loan committee. He holds a Juris Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in economics and business administration from Baldwin-Wallace University. Mr. Slezak is licensed to practice law in the states of Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas. He has five children.
Vice President of Human Resources and Legal Operations
Randy Ammons joined Affordable Care in 2013 as director of legal operations. He previously worked for Dex Media as director of labor and employment law, and as vice president of human resources. Before that, Mr. Ammons was a partner at a law firm in Cleveland, where his practice focused on labor and employment law and litigation. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and a Juris Doctorate from Tulane University. Mr. Ammons is married with one son.
Michael S. Thomas
Vice President of Laboratory Operations
Michael Thomas has risen through the ranks since he started as a dental laboratory technician at Affordable Dentures Dental Laboratories (ADDL), Affordable Care’s lab company, in 1998. He served as laboratory manager in Augusta, Georgia, providing services to two affiliated practices, and in 2000 assumed the role of southeast regional manager with the additional responsibility of De Novo development in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Mr. Thomas was then ADDL senior regional manager for five years, and Affordable Care division vice president for one year before assuming his current role. Prior to joining Affordable Care, he studied engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and owned and operated a commercial laboratory in Birmingham. Mr. Thomas lives in Kinston, North Carolina, with his wife and daughter.
